Funny how folk music forked into a primarily indie art form at some point after the 60’s and 70’s. There was time when Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Donovan, and CSN were legit mainstream artists. The British folkies like Fairport Convention, Nick Drake and Robert Wyatt tended to be critical favs, but perhaps the music was too precious, too progressive, too sad to make a dent. I guess you can point to Elliot Smith as the godfather of modern indie folk almost twenty years ago, and in his wake hundreds of great artists have emerged.
February must be folk month, because there seem to be a half dozen excellent new albums by some of the greats. Enjoy, build a collection, and get dialed in.
